This is an edited transcript of the discussion. In this episode of the Inside the Strategy Room podcast, James Manyika, who chairs the McKinsey Global Institute and recently co-authored a paper about the 21st-century company (inspired by conversations with CEOs like Brian Chesky), learns from the Airbnb leader what that ride was like. The online lodging marketplace went from predictions that it might not survive the COVID-19 crisis to staging a successful IPO less than nine months later. Keep checking on Chesky's profile you just might be one of the lucky ones. For Brian Chesky and Airbnb, the pandemic crisis was a bigger roller-coaster ride than almost any other organization experienced. "Brian told me he randomly selects some dates each year to open up his apartment to Airbnb guests and if you are lucky, such as I was, you will have the experience of a lifetime - to witness AND experience the origins of a great company (equivalent to working alongside Larry and Sergey in their original garage :)" And you know you won the lottery, so to speak, to get to sleep on this couch - WHERE IT ALL STARTED," wrote an Airbnb member. It's evident they really care about the Airbnb community and want to continually be involved in its story."Īnother guest pointed out that Brian's couch is available for rent only occasionally. "As an aspiring entrepreneur just moving into the city, I was amazed by the genuine friendliness and transparency of Brian and Elissa. "Needless to say, staying in the apartment of the original Airbnb was one of the most inspiring experiences of my life," another shared. We even did a morning yoga session at the house! Had a chance to philosophize over wine and geek out over TED and tech and the future of communities." "Brian is friendly, funny and down to earth. "Warm and welcoming and most importantly, great people!" a guest of Chesky wrote. But the page is filled with dozens of reviews raving about his comfortable pad and friendly hospitality. SFGate took a look at Chesky's profile page on Airbnb and the couch isn't currently listed so we can't provide specifics on the accommodations. He adds: "I just like hosting because I like to meet people and typically they are entrepreneurs themselves." "It's available throughout the year, you can book the couch for just like $50." "I still live in the original Airbnb and I still Airbnb it so you can book it," he told People.
